The cosmos & purpose

How should we understand our place in the cosmos?

The scale and history of the universe raise questions that reach beyond astronomy. We explore the relationship between cosmic vastness and human significance, and between natural processes and the idea of purpose in creation.

A varied world from underlying principles

A central interest is the emergence of rich structure from relatively simple underlying laws and conditions. We examine the scientific explanations of that process and ask how they relate to Jewish thought about unity, creation, and providence. Natural explanations can themselves become a subject of theological reflection.

The boundaries of the known universe

The institute’s scientific interests include dark matter and possible extra dimensions. Our philosophical inquiry also considers the conditions for life, fine-tuning arguments, and proposed multiverse models, attending to the assumptions and evidential status of each.

Questions guiding our work

  • Does physical size determine significance?
  • How can natural processes and purpose be understood together?
  • What follows from the conditions that make life possible?
